Children
never cease to wonder.
Pre-schoolers
cannot accept that things just happen- they need to know why they
happen. Reinforcing these emerging cognitive functions can be done
using simple activities at home or at school. By reinforcing these
skills early on, you are helping set the foundation for academic
skills later on.
Some
activities that you may find helpful in developing their sense of
discovery
- small pieces of paper or index cards
- pen or marker
- old bag / wide mouthed bottle
- research material
- availability to go to the library or bookstore
- art paper
- art supplies: markers, crayons, paint
Method
Think of common questions that children want to know the answer
to, i.e. where does the sun go at night? Why is grass green? How
come there are no flowers in the winter? Etc.
- Write a different question on a sheet of paper or index card.
- Place all of the questions in the hat.
- Ask the child to pull one question out. Read the question for
the child.
- Now, journey to the library, bookstore or Internet to find some
possible answers. Read the information with your pre-schooler.
- When your child has answered the posed question, have him/her
provide an illustration to depict what they learned.
This
activity can be done as often as you want. There are an infinite
number of questions that can be placed inside the hat. These questions
can also be put into groups or categories what may be of particular
interest at the time.
Mixing
colors is popular with preschool. This method gives the
child more control and allows them to experiment with results.
What
You Need:
- Ice cube trays or egg cartons
- Water
- Eyedroppers
- Food coloring
Method
1. Fill four sections of the tray with water.
2. Add a few drops of food coloring to each to create four colors.
3. Let the children use the eye droppers to mix colors in the remaining
empty sections.
4. Talk to them about what they see. Ask the children to predict
what might happen and describe what actually occurs.
Give
the children other opportunities to mix colors. Provide them with
colored frosting and let them decorate cookies or just fingerpaint
with primary colors.
